U.S. NAVY ORDERS MT7 ENGINES FOR LCAC 100
INDIANAPOLIS -- Rolls-Royce Corp., Indianapolis, Indiana, has been awarded a $40.9 million U.S. Navy contract for the procurement of 20 production MT7 marine turbine engines for the Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) 100 class craft 109 through 113. The LCAC 100 is also known as the Ship-to-Shore Connector, and is replacing the service's aging LCAC 1 fleet. Work under this contract will be performed in Indianapolis, Indiana, and is expected to be completed by January, 2020. The engines will be delivered to Textron Marine Systems for assembly of the craft. The Navy is obligating $16.4 million in FY17 shipbuilding funding and $24.5 million in FY18 shipbuilding funding.
The LCAC 100 program is valued at around $4.9 billion for 73 craft. Congress bolstered procurement rates the past two years. The Navy requested three craft in FY18 and five craft in FY19, and Congress ultimately provided funding for eight craft in both the FY18 and FY19 defense appropriations bills. The Navy will continue to procure eight craft per year over the coming years. The service had previously planned to buy five craft per year before the procurement rate was increased in the FY19 spending plan. The ramp-up means that procurement is now slated to end in FY26, compared to FY30 under the previous plan.
