NEWTOWN, Conn. -- The AQS-18(V) of helicopter-borne, lightweight dipping sonar system is the export version of the U.S. Navy's AQS-13(V) made by L3Harris (formerly L3 Ocean Systems). It is used quite extensively worldwide.

The ASW system detects and maintains contact with underwater targets through a transducer lowered into the water from a hovering helicopter. It provides target classification clues and can accurately determine the opening or closing rates of moving targets. The AQS 13F has been designed to provide rapid tactical response against the most advanced submarine threats. High-speed reeling allows a dip cycled to maximum depth to be completed within 3.5 minutes, while the azimuth and range indicator and receiver provide a video display for the operator.

This helicopter-borne dipping sonar presents a highly desirable solution for many ASW applications, especially smaller platforms that have limited helicopter operation facilities. As a large number of the light frigates entering service have facilities for light helicopters only, they will primarily carry general purpose types; however, these will include a number of ASW-dedicated aircraft, opening up a market opportunity for the AQS-18(V). Furthermore, the high number of AQS-18(V) sonars already in service worldwide would suggest a continuing upgrade and maintenance market. All this activity should provide opportunity for enhancements and upgrades

Unfortunately, the AQS-18 faces strong competition on the world market going against Thales' FLASH and Compact FLASH dipping sonars - with the Compact FLASH being specifically designed for the light helicopter market.
