NORTHROP GRUMMAN TO PROVIDE SENSOR SUSTAINMENT FOR DEFENSE METEOROLOGICAL SATELLITE PROGRAM
AZUSA, Calif. -- Northrop Grumman Systems Corp., of Azusa, California has been awarded a $7,138,693 firm-fixed-price and cost-reimbursement contract modification (P00008) to a previously awarded contract (FA8803-17-C-0001), from the United States Air Force, for Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) sensor sustainment. This contract modification provides for the exercise of an option for sensor sustainment of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program on-orbit constellation being provided under the basic contract.
The DMSP monitors meteorological, oceanographic, and solar-terrestrial physics for the U.S. Department of Defense. The program is managed by the Air Force Space Command with on-orbit operations provided by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The (originally classified) mission of the satellites was revealed in March 1973. They provide cloud cover imagery from polar orbits that are sun-synchronous at nominal altitude of 450 nautical miles (830 km).
Work will be performed in Azusa, California; Baltimore, Maryland; Boulder, Colorado; and Dallas, Texas, and is expected to be completed by May 31, 2019. Fiscal 2018 operations and maintenance funds are being obligated at the time of award. The total cumulative face value of the contract is $14,161,180. The U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center, Los Angeles Air Force Base, California, is the contracting activity.
